| Sometimes
a group of programmers will start
to tinker with a game, make a
change here add a model there,
change the physics and rules somewhat
and find themselves stood smack
bang in the middle of a project
thats far better than the original
game. Counterstrike is probably
the most notorious example of
this kind of happening, and what
a fine example it is. It was so
good that it was worth packaging
and selling to the public at a
premium.
Somewhere burried
under a largely modified interface
lies Valves award winning Halflife
engine (which is actually the
Quake 2 engine) and but for
a few tell tale give aways you
would never have known. The
graphics have been hugely reworked
and the gamestyle bears no resemblance
to the original. Only elements
of the UI remain to give the
game away.
For me, the
game itself has its feet firmly
rooted in Action Quake with
its realistic guns, weapon limitations
and instant bloody death for
the careless. The game starts
with a visit to the 'Gun Shop'
via the in game menu to purchase
your choice of the available
tools of destruction (or if
you were one of the previous
levels luck few survivors its
an opportunity to reload and
beef up your armour) and additional
toys. You only get to carry
2 guns, A primary weapon (everything
from shotguns to a belt fed
machine gun) and a secondary
weapon (A choice of pistols).
Add to that a free knife and
a selection of armour and grenades
and you're ready to dish out
some punishment.
Terrorist or
Counter Terrorist you have a
mission to perform and you are
going to have to be more cunning
than a street wise fox. No running
into a room and opening fire
willy nilly here (well you can,
but expect to be blown into
pieces so small the worms won't
have to chew). You need to behave
like you're life really is on
the line to survive. The game
takes on a 'Last Man Standing'
style for the most part (there
are also additional ways to
win including rescueing hostages
and bombing important rooms
full of boxes) and you earn
your money buy winning rounds
and killing your enemies.
What else is
there to say? This game has
a HUGE following, and almost
everyone who plays is hooked
from their first taste of action.
